Akakios

   Patriarch of Constantinople (qq.v.) from 472-489, whose name is attached to the first schism between the churches of Rome and Constantinople (qq.v). His opposition to the emperor Basiliskos's (q.v.) support of Monophysitism (q.v.) was resolved when Daniel the Stylite (q.v.) came down from his pillar and forced Basiliskos to reconcile with Akakios. However, Akakios's own attempt to pacify the Monophysites of Alexandria (q.v.) provoked the wrath of Pope (q.v.) Felix III, as did the further attempt at compromise, the Henotikon (q.v.). Felix III's excommunication of Akakios resulted in the Akakian Schism (q.v.), which lasted from 484-519.
